Culebra has one landfill that connects with Tamarindo Beach and the Cayo Luis Peña Nature Reserve.

This landfill is not enough. It is an enormous mountain of garbage, full to capacity. Most of the plastic trash exposed, ends in the sea. Biomedical waste, scrap, livestock, and leachate need an adequate collection system to prevent them from gaining access to the sea.

Culebra depends on a proper solid waste management system to keep it clean and an aggressive recycling program to prevent recyclable material from continuing to be deposited in the landfill. This way we can help protect and conserve the coasts and coral reefs of our small island.

FLAMENCO

Flamenco Beach is recognized as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. Its sand is white, the water is crystal clear and a reef is facing the beach. It has a marine visual spectacle of corals, fish, sea turtles and stingrays. It is bordered by the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge and is the island’s only beach with a campsite.

PUNTA SOLDADO

Punta Soldado has an extensive shore formed by small dry corals and pebbles. It is one of the most recommended beaches for "snorkeling" and diving. Its calm and clear water lets you enjoy a great exhibition of turtles, fish, octopus, lobsters, and other marine species.

ZONI

Zoni Beach is a much quieter beach and a favorite one if you wish to escape from the crowds. You will be able to see a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean, Cayo Norte, Culebrita and St. Thomas. Beautiful birds surround this area and is the favorite nesting place of the Tinglar and Carey turtles, both in danger of extinction.

TAMARINDO

This beach has more than a mile of sand, remains of corals and stones, but the real magic is beneath the surface. The variety of corals such as, fire, fans, and maple horns inhabiting the reef located in the Cayo Luis Peña Nature Reserve in Playa Tamarindo are unique and a true spectacle. It is one of the few beaches where you can easily swim in company of sea turtles, stingrays and hundreds of marine species.

What will we do with your contribution?

1. Plastic and cardboard compactor

Converts large amounts of recyclable material into small blocks. This allows you to transport more in fewer trips, saving fuel and respecting the environment.

2. Hiring contractors for the collection of scrap

We need to remove vehicles, debris, and scrap accumulated in the landfill, in order to purify the environment of the contaminants, and to detoxify the reserve area.

3. Garbage containers

We need to expand the installation of containers on the beaches, and distribute containers to bonafide residents to educate them about the recycling program we are implementing.

4. Personal protective equipment for employees

Our employees are exposed to a high degree of contamination that puts their health at risk. We need respirators or face masks, disposable aprons, industrial footwear and leather gloves to avoid sharp injuries or needle punctures.
